Résumé
To analyze the situation of sociology, we can distinguish, drawing on the French case, the external onslaughts and the internal disputes in the discipline by endeavouring to comprehend how these are articulated. The critical role of sociology can be understood according to four modes of expression, operating on the one hand between artistic critique and social critique, on the other hand between reformism and contestation. However, this critical role of sociology tends towards two models of operation, that of scientific innovation and that of the artistic avant-gardes. When the critical function of sociology conflates with the avant-garde model and when internal crisis and internal attack articulate with each other, the intensity of the feeling of endangerment of the discipline reaches its acme.
