This article draws some threads from the influence of Lynn Margulis’ work in Donna Haraway’s writings. Starting from their common refusal of human exceptionalism, the article first explores how Lynn Margulis’ symbiogenesis enables Donna Haraway to propose the concepts of companion species and contact zones. The article then shows how Donna Haraway fashioned the concept of sympoiesis in homage to Lynn Margulis so as to extend shared intuitions about the bizarre and unexpected dimensions of the origins of living things and companion species.
