This study examined the level of personal and marital distress reported by victims of child or adolescent sexual abuse who consult in individual or couple psychotherapy. The role of three particular characteristics of sexual trauma (type of abuse, relational proximity with the abuser, and frequency) was explored to better understand the heterogeneity of difficulties among survivors of childhood sexual trauma. A sample of 705 adults consulting for marital or relational problems completed self-administered questionnaires on child or adolescent sexual abuse, dyadic adjustment, attachment disorder, and psychological distress. Results indicated that the characteristics of sexual abuse are associated with specific effects in adulthood. Specifically, abuses perpetrated by a family member or accompanied by anal or vaginal penetration are associated with higher levels of attachment insecurities, as well as psychological and marital distress. Overall, the results support the importance of systematic evaluation of sexual abuse, the characteristics of the abuse, and the related consequences in a clinical setting.
