Comment expliquer que le discours « traditionnel » de la sorcellerie résiste aux bouleversements de la modernité ? Cet article avance l’hypothèse qu’il y a une forte convergence entre la sorcellerie, qui exprime une ouverture relative de la communauté locale, et la globalisation, qui ouvre l’accès à de nouveaux horizons. De façon plus générale, la résilience de la sorcellerie participe d’un « ré-enchantement » du monde, également sensible sous d’autres latitudes. Pour en prendre la mesure, il convient d’abandonner toute tentative de classification et d’adopter une épistémologie pluraliste.

Witchcraft and modernity: the return to an odd complicityHow is it that « traditional » discourse on witchcraft has shown such surprising resilience in the face of modernity? In this article, the author demonstrates that there is a basic convergence between witchcraft, as a somewhat hidden opening in the closure of the local community, and the emergence of both fascinating and frightening new horizons, which include the impact of recent transformations in the world-market. Generally speaking, the resilience of witchcraft in Africa seems to parallel manifestations of the « re-enchantment » of modernity noted elsewhere in the world. The study of the modern dynamics of witchcraft challenges current academic perspectives: instead of insisting on definitions and the classification of these phenomena, we should work towards a pluralist epistemology.
