Research on the production of African pottery, which can often be up to eight thousand years old, has not, up till, now been organized in relation to the needs of historians for the kind of data pertaining to their discipline, nor has it been properly coordinated. In reviewing each of the phases in the making of pottery, with a view toward a systematic study in an historical perspective, the author especially emphasizes the need for research on the raw materials, the firing techniques and the sale of African pottery. He concludes expressing the hope that all excavations and all present. production may lead to the setting up of typologies and that a Review of African Pottery be published and that a general corpus of different types of production be undertaken.

Les recherches sur la production céramique africaine, près de huit fois millénaire, n’ont été jusqu’à présent ni organisées en fonction des besoins d’information propres aux historiens, ni sérieusement coordonnées. Reprenant, pour en demander l’étude systématique dans une perspective historique, chacune des phases de la fabrication des poteries, l’auteur insiste particulièrement sur les enquêtes à mener concernant la matière première, les techniques de cuisson, la vente des céramiques africaines. Il conclut en souhaitant que toute fouille ou toute production actuelle donnent lieu à des typologies, que des Cahiers de la céramique africaine soient publiés et qu’un corpus général de ces productions soit entrepris.
