Le sixième siècle avant J.-C. a vu naître une nouvelle sorte d’intellectuels grecs en Ionie qui, délaissant la poésie pour la prose et adoptant une vision critique de la poésie et de la mythologie, dépassèrent les frontières du soi-disant spatium mythicum. Ils inaugurèrent un nouveau type d’écriture en prose, de type majoritairement narratif et descriptif, basé sur des notes tirées d’une expérience de première main, ou sur une forme d’analyse des sources. Bien que les érudits aient regroupé ceux-ci selon certains critères et leur aient donné des noms choisis (polymathes, logographoi, histores, etc.), on peut dire que ces intellectuels ont tous produit une forme de recherche en prose (ἱστορίη) allant des traditions locales, contes populaires, rationalisations mythologiques, génealogies, récits de voyages, descriptions de peuples étrangers, jusqu’à ce type de discours sur le passé humain que nous appelons aujourd’ hui des « histoires » . Le propos de cet article est de s’intéresser à la catégorie d’historia afin d’ esquisser quelques traits méthodologiques et linguistiques de ces premiers textes en tant qu’ il s’écartent du discours poétique (surtout dans la tradition homérique, hésiodique ou élégiaque). Grâce à une sélection de fragments ou de passages tirés de ces premiers textes en prose – depuis Hécatée de Milet, Phérécyde d’Athènes, Phérécyde de Syros, jusqu’à l’ Histoire Hérodote d’Halicarnasse (livre II), cet article explore le début d’un certain nombre de procédés de commentateurs et d’exégètes qui vont de la prosification ou l'observation étymologique directe, à des opérations plus complexes d'explication ou de critique de la matière traditionnelle.
