'Las Cabañas de Tom’: de la traducción a la adecuación de las ideas abolicionistas a la escena española

Résumé En

This article analyzes the theatrical adaptations into Spanish of two famous abolitionist works, "Uncle Tom's Cabin" by Harriett Beecher Stowe (1852) amd "Cora ou l'esclavage" by Jules Barbier (1861). We show how this translation process is marked by an effort to tone down, silence and even manipulate the original abolitionist message at a time when Spain maintained slavery in its overseas provinces. These adaptations, released between 1853 and 1865, can thus be read as a move towards a slow introduction of abolitionism on the Spanish stage.
