A contrastive study between English and German: fear/Angst and guilt/Schuld in decision-making

The aim of this paper is to study the words expressing the emotions of fear/Angst and guilt/Schuld in English and German in decision-making contexts. The conceptual metaphor is used as a cognitive tool to test how decision making might result from the way the information is semantically expressed via the emotions of fear/Angst and guilt/Schuld. Using a corpus-based approach to the study of metaphorical mapping, I identify which conceptual metaphors have the strongest/weakest association with the given emotion words under scrutiny.

L’objectif de cet article est d’explorer les marqueurs émotionnels fear/Angst (peur) et guilt/Schuld (culpabilité) en Anglais et Allemand dans la prise de décision. Comme la prise de décision est un processus cognitif (Gardner & Steinberg, 2005), la métaphore conceptuelle est utilisée comme un outil cognitif afin de tester comment la prise de décision pourrait résulter de la façon dont l’information est exprimée sémantiquement avec les émotions de fear/Angst et guilt/Schuld. Au moyen d’une cartographie métaphorique fondée sur les corpus linguistiques, j’identifie quelles métaphores conceptuelles sont le plus fortement/faiblement associées aux marqueurs émotionnels donnés. Cette étude est effectuée la fonction émotionnelle dans la prise de décision comme émotions immédiates et anticipées.
