Labiaplasty is aesthetic surgery that reduces the size of the labia minora. Linked to other current phenomena in society (fashion, depilation), it demonstrates the emergence of a norm of the female genitals known as the vulva “gold standard.” However, through pubic depilation and nymphectomy, we will see how these standardizing criteria, presented as highly contemporary, are in fact in keeping with a continuity of imaginary collective representations related to the female genitals. We will show the relation between examples drawn from different times and places with our current day clinical practice of labiaplasty.
