Die österreichische Sozialdemokratie hat in den Jahren 1889 bis 1914 eine Reihe von originellen Theorien zur nationalen Frage entwickelt, die bald als austromarxistisch bezeichnet wurden. Der Artikel versucht die Genese der austromarxistischen Theorien, und die damit verbundenen Kontroversen darzustellen ; diese werden dem vielschichtigen Erbe der Sozialdemokraten gegenüberstellt, das sowohl einen proklamierten Internationalismus als auch den Traum von der großen deutschen Republik beinhaltet. Anhand einiger konkreter Beispiele behandelt der Beitrag zudem den ab 1890 gewichtigen Einfluss des Deutschnationalismus innerhalb der österreichischen Sozialdemokratie, welcher das Prestige der habsburgischen „Kleinen Internationale“ relativiert.

Austrian Social Democracy, during the period between 1889 and 1914, developed a line of theoretical reflection on the national question that gained it an original identity often characterised as “Austro-Marxism”. This article presents the origin of these theories and the controversies they stimulated by confronting them with the diverse heritage of Social Democracy which mixed together a proclamatory internationalism with the dream of a grand republic which would group together all the germanophone peoples. The article also revisits the weight of German nationalism in the ranks of the Social Democrats from the 1890s onwards with the use of some precise examples, thereby relativising the prestige of the imperial “little International”.

La social-démocratie autrichienne a développé entre 1889 et 1914 une série de réflexions théoriques sur la question nationale lui conférant une identité originale souvent désignée par le terme «austro-marxiste». L’article présente la genèse de ces théories et les controverses qu’elles ont occasionnées, en les confrontant aux multiples héritages des sociaux-démocrates qui mêlent un internationalisme proclamé avec le rêve d’une grande république regroupant tous les peuples germanophones. Il revient également sur le poids du nationalisme allemand dans les rangs sociaux-démocrates dès les années 1890 à travers quelques exemples précis, relativisant le prestige de la «Petite Internationale» de l’Empire.
