Cet article interroge l’expérience théâtrale vécue par le spectateur, telle qu’elle est présentée dans plusieurs discours contre le théâtre. Il examine ensuite le changement radical opéré sur cette question par Jean-Baptiste Dubos, théoricien de l’art et diplomate sous trois régimes politiques différents. La conclusion s’efforce de rattacher la question « comment fonctionnent les émotions théâtrales ? » à la construction stratégique, sociale et politique des émotions.

This essay examines the theatrical experience of the spectator as it is presented in several texts against the theatre. I next interrogate a radical shift concerning this “impression” that was inspired by Jean-Baptiste Dubos, an art theorist and diplomat under three different political regimes. In the conclusion, the question “how do the emotions of theatrical spectating function” informs a discussion of the strategic, political, and social construction of the emotions in Old-Regime France.
