Résumé 0

‪The article reflects on the repatriation process of the twenty-six artefacts between France and the Republic of Benin. It shows that before a very publicized and politicized repatriation claim was made, the representative of a community, a descendent of the looted objects’ rightful previous owners, had already initiated contact. The contact was initiated not with the former colonial nation, but rather with the President of Benin, asking him to work towards the return of the objects to their motherland. So begins Benin’s heritage repatriation claim to France, as well as the setup of repossession policies in order to shape a national identity around the repatriated goods.‪
