Bernard Delpal, « L’affaire du carmel d’Auschwitz dans l’évolution de l’attitude catholique à l’égard des Juifs et du judaïsme », Revue d’Histoire de la Shoah, ID : 10670/1.g89n7d
The “Auschwitz Carmel Affair” in the context of the progress in Catholic attitude towards Jews and JudaismIn the middle of the pontificate of Pope John Paul II the Judeo-Christian relationship was affected by the “Auschwitz Carmel crisis”, an affair that arose from the settlement inside the area of a catholic religious community (end 1984). Thanks to negotiations conducted on Christian and Jewish sides by remarkable personalities, the breaking point was avoided and the crisis mainly resolved in 1993.The central situation of Auschwitz as a universal site of the Shoah was strengthened. At the same time the catholic magisterium become aware of the urgency to make known Judaism, a task situated in the consequences of Vatican II and which becomes obvious after the silence concerning the genocide during the Second World War and the immediate postwar years.
