Stressed word-initial stops of Wu can be perceived as “voiced” when signaled by a low tone with some voiced breathiness following. However, intervocalic stops are voiced. Our study in Suzhou Wu yielded similar results of voicing. Concerning breathiness, H1-A1 and HNR showed a strong correlation between breathy voice and low tone in the onset of vowels of utterance-initial syllables, which lost its salience at the midpoint in contrary to H1-H2. Therefore, “breathiness” is suggested as a degree rather than a phonation type, since it does not contrast directly with modal voice in our data, and all vowels seem to have a greater or lesser degree of breathiness, regardless of their tones. However, breathy voice did not vary in intervocalic syllables.
