Richelieu avant Richelieu : le château du père du cardinal

Le château de Richelieu, aujourd’hui presqu’entièrement disparu, a été construit pour Armand Jean du Plessis, cardinal-duc de Richelieu, qui a fait de la demeure familiale en Poitou un édifice d’une rare ambition. Ce vaste complexe n’a cependant pas été réalisé ex nihilo, mais a été élevé autour d’un corps de logis préexistant, dont on savait seulement jusqu’à présent qu’il avait été bâti pour le père du cardinal, François du Plessis, grand prévôt de France. La découverte d’un marché passé en 1585 pour la construction de ce bâtiment offre donc les premières données certaines sur ce premier château, dont on peut désormais préciser la chronologie et la disposition. En établissant ce qui fut fait à la fin du XVIe siècle, ce document inédit permet en outre de mieux comprendre certains aspects des grands travaux voulus par le cardinal, qui furent conditionnés par ceux entrepris pour son père.

The château de Richelieu, which has now almost completely disappeared, was built for Armand Jean du Plessis, Cardinal-Duke of Richelieu, who turned the family home in Poitou into an exceptionally ambitious building. This vast complex was not, however, built from scratch, but was built around a pre-existing main building, which until now was only known to have been built for the Cardinal’s father, François du Plessis, Lord High Provost of France. The discovery of a contract signed in 1585 for the construction of this building therefore provides the first certain data on this first château, whose chronology and layout can now be determined. By establishing what was done at the end of the 16th century, this hitherto unpublished document also provides a better understanding of certain aspects of the major works desired by the Cardinal, which were conditioned by those undertaken for his father.
