Résumé 0

This article examines the issue of women’s ordination to the diaconate, which was discussed anew at the Amazon Synod. We will consider the scriptural and historical background before discussing the issue’s pastoral pertinence, which is undoubtedly the real issue at stake. Since the Second Vatican Council and the establishment of a permanent diaconate for men, there has been recurring debate concerning the possibility of a female diaconate. This article reconsiders the arguments raised in opposition to this ordination before underlining the extent to which the opening of the diaconate to women would suit the situation of female Christians exercising positions of responsibility and missions in the Church and in civil society. This recognition of women’s ministry would build upon the image of Christ as servant and would be consonant with the more synodal Church desired by Pope Francis.
