Cette étude suit partiellement un axe imposé par la critique du vivant de Stephen Crane : celui de la dimension picturale ou photographique de l’œuvre ; mais elle aborde également un aspect de celle-ci qui est, lui, pratiquement neuf : la présence dans les œuvres courtes (« sketches » new-yorkais, nouvelles, et sa novella, Maggie, a Girl of the Streets), ainsi que dans son bref roman, The Red Badge of Courage, de stratégies narratives qui annoncent celles du cinéma. Ce double travail s’appuie sur les analyses de Gilles Deleuze dans L’Image-mouvement pour tenter de montrer comment le va-et-vient entre l’image fixe et l’image mouvante est au cœur des thématiques craniennes et comment il permet de percevoir leur modernité.

This article partially follows a critical axis which imposed itself in Stephen Crane’s lifetime: that of the work’s pictorial or photographic aspect; but it also tries to approach it from an almost new angle: the presence in the short works (New York “sketches,” short stories, and his novella, Maggie, a Girl of the Streets) and in his short novel, The Red Badge of Courage, of narrative strategies which herald those of American movies. This twofold study relies on Gilles Deleuze’s analyses in The Moving Image to try and show how the constant plying between the fixed image and the moving image is at the heart of Crane’s themes and how it helps us to perceive their modernity.
