Jewish Cook Books: In Search of a Lost World?Cooking, transmitted from mothers to daughters over generations, reveals the material culture of Jews and has incited growing interest. Showing the diversity of Jewish culture and identity over time, cooking constitutes a formidable vector in the transmission of Jewish identities. This article overviews Jewish cookbook literature in the French language, from 1929-2012: Jewish-North African, Jewish-Polish, Israeli, Alsatian, Andalusian, Greek and more generally Jewish. While some of these books do not mention religious recommendations, all of them take them into account, at least implicitly. The explosion of cook book literature in the 1990s reveals the increasing Jewish interest in questions related to memory and transmission. Cookbooks contribute to the preservation of the cultural traditions of lost worlds, often presenting a nostalgic, yet hopeful, narrative which seeks to revive the memory of loved ones and the tastes of childhood, reconstitute emotions, places, accents, and a lifestyle whose traces are sought out in the present. And at the same time, they seek to reinvent tradition in order to better transmit it...
