Pedro Mexía’s Silva de varia lección, one of the great best-sellers of the Renaissance, devotes an entire chapter to a letter supposedly written by Plutarch to the Emperor Trajan. The chapter is an oddity in a work whose materials are culled according to the aesthetic criteria of curiositas and brevitas and presented in the mode of narratio. Plutarch’s letter may meet the requisite of brevity, but it contains no element of narration and offers little in the way of historical curiosity; thus i...
