La formation de l’économie française : Émergence et stabilisation d’une entité collective

Aujourd’hui naturalisée, l’économie française est une entité relativement nouvelle, qui se forme pas à pas dans la première moitié du XXe siècle. Cet article retrace l’histoire de son émergence. Il montre le rôle de la discipline économique et des économistes pour la mettre au jour et, ce faisant, lui donner un surplus d’existence. De nombreux travaux menés dans l’entre-deux-guerres tentent ainsi d’accumuler des preuves sur la consistance de cette entité et d’en documenter la nature. Ce n’est que dans les années qui suivent la Libération que l’économie française est véritablement constituée, reconnue publiquement et associée à une nouvelle inquiétude, celle de trouver les moyens nécessaires pour l’orienter et la maîtriser. L’article montre enfin combien la formation de l’économie française sert une redéfinition de l’État, qui trouve en elle un nouveau terrain d’intervention, une nouvelle catégorie d’action publique, destinée à devenir centrale dans la seconde partie du siècle.

The French economy is a relatively new entity, taking shape in the first half of the twentieth century. This article traces the history of its emergence. It shows the role of economics and economists in bringing it to light and, in so doing, giving it a surplus of existence. First, we follow the work carried out by economists in the interwar period to accumulate evidence of the consistency of this entity and to document its nature. Second, we show that it was only in the years following the Liberation that the French economy was truly constituted and publicly recognized, and associated with a new concern, that of finding the required means to orient and control it. Third, we argue that the formation of the French economy fostered a redefinition of the state, which found in it a new field of intervention, a new category of public action, destined to become central in the second half of the century.
