Architecte néerlandais, Herman Hertzberger s’est emparé de l’approche structuraliste pour penser la relation entre l’usager et l’espace, proposant une vision de l’architecture comme structure appropriable. La notion d’appropriation constitue ainsi un prisme essentiel pour analyser les logements réalisés par Hertzberger, de l’espace conçu à l’espace vécu. L’opération de la rue Haarlemmer Houttuinen a fait l’objet d’une enquête post-occupancy pour évaluer les modalités concrètes de cette appropriation par les habitants.

A Dutch architect, Herman Hertzberger used the structural approach to think about the relationship between the user and space, proposing a vision of architecture as an appropriable structure. The notion of appropriation thus constitutes an essential prism for analysing the housing realized by Hertzberger, from the designed space to the lived space. The operation of Haarlemmer Houttuinen Street was the subject of a post-occupancy survey to evaluate the concrete modalities of this appropriation by the inhabitants.
