This chapter seeks to update a set of debates linked to materialism, Marxism, and the capitalist mode of production, which have permeated queer theories since their emergence. These debates have been important elements of confrontation and exchange for queer authors. The aim will be to identify the convergences, but also the divergences, between these two traditions. In the first part, we will focus in particular on the similarities and differences in the conceptions of materialism and the question of history in Butler and Marx. Despite the divergences, Butlerian reflections have opened up the possibility of a dialogue with Marxism and an incorporation of economics and the neoliberal mode of accumulation in the queer analyses of the last two decades.
