The keyword of the indian political history is not revolution; it is reform, a word which, in the course of time, has been bracketed together with various epithets. The reform was, at first, religious when, from the beginning of the 19th century, in the face of propaganda by Christian missionaries, enlightened Brahmins endeavoured to moderniza Hinduism - claiming to restore its original purity to give it a quasi-monotheistic version. Later the reform became social when the movements committed to religious reforms took note of how the social and the religious, weighed down by the caste system, were inextricably related in Hinduism...
