Emphasis in this colloquium is legitimately on the more strictly military aspects of late medieval warfare. Here, however, attention will be directed to military service as just one facet of the lives led by those called gentry in England and noblesse in France. Nowhere was the noblesse more numerous than in Brittany, perhaps a major reason why there is still no good general study.
