Pour bien comprendre d’où vient la violence dans le travail social, il faut analyser la relation d’aide. La relation d’aide est une relation sociale qui met en présence trois acteurs : l’usager, le travailleur social et le dirigeant de l’organisation d’aide. La place du travailleur social dans cette relation est singulière ; en effet, il est l’intermédiaire entre l’usager et le service social. Le travailleur social se retrouve ainsi à la croisée d’une part des demandes et revendications des usagers et d’autre part, des exigences de rentabilité et de performance des dirigeants. Ce statut d’intermédiaire est source de tensions, non seulement entre les attentes du travailleur social et celles de l’usager mais aussi entre les attentes du travailleur social et celles des dirigeants. Comment et pourquoi ces tensions peuvent-elles se traduire, à un moment donné, en violence tantôt symbolique, tantôt verbale, tantôt physique ? Quels sont les facteurs qui favorisent les conduites agressives ?

In order t understand what is the origin of violence in social work, we have to analyse the relation of help. The relation of help is a social relation that involves three actors: the user, the social worker and the director of the help organisation. The place of the social worker in this organisation is particular; he is indeed the intermediary between the user and the social service, he is at the junction between the requests and the claims of the user on the one hand and the directors’ demand of performance and profitability on the other hand. This status as an intermediary results in tensions, not only between the expectations of the social worker and the ones of the user but also between the expectations of the social worker and the ones of the director. How and why can those tensions be translated into a violence which might be symbolical, verbal or physical? What are the factors that favour aggressive behaviours?
