Résumé
In the framework of the European Research Council-funded “Crossroads of Empires” project led by Anne Haour (Haour at al. 2011), an ongoing research project aims to understand the history of the blacksmiths and the development of the iron production on the Dendi country. The first mission in January-February 2013 appears that there are numerous remains of iron production, showing a large variability in furnace design and waste assemblage. At least three different iron traditions can be distinguished. Such technological diversity in a small area had been showed before in other areas of sub-Saharan Africa: Dogon region of Mali (Robion-Brunner 2010) and the Sanmatenga region of Burkina Faso (Serneels et al. 2012).In this presentation, we seek at investigating the variability of metallurgical artefacts in terms of identity. Consequently, we will look at a possible relation between iron traditions and the identity and the history of the ironworkers.
