"The present cuasi-experimental study examines the results of a quantitativeanalysis of Agarimos, a comprehensive coeducational sex education programme carriedout with 12-years-old students enrolled in their first year of compulsory secondaryschool during the 2003-2004 academic year. The experimental group is compared to acontrol group which is made up of a similar number of participants of the same age,gender and course of studies. Both groups are administered questionnaires on bodysatisfaction, self-concept, self-esteem, knowledge about sexual organs, knowledge aboutnutrition, attitudes toward gender roles, and attitudes toward sexuality. Significantdifferences are found between the experimental and control groups in the questionnairesadministered upon completion of the programme in the following experimental variables:knowledge about sexual organs, knowledge about nutrition, and attitudes towardgender roles. This suggests that the programme has a positive effect on adolescentspsychosexual development and in their understanding of gender-related issues. Alsothis points out the importance of implementing programmes such as this, which offersan alternative to the traditional model of education focused mainly on rational intelligence,and which encourage more holistic development of personality in teenagers."
