Résumé 0

"Burnout has been identified as a significant problem inhealth care professions, particularly for those working inchronic care. Occupational burnout is conceptualised as aparticular type of stress occurring principally in professionalcontexts where work overload demands, especially those ofan interpersonal nature, lead to chronic emotional exhaustion, depersonalization and reduced sense of personal accomplishmentexplaining most of the physical and psychologicalproblems at work. The issue of burnout in health careworkers in the area of HIV disease has become increasinglyimportant in the past decade. However, there has been littlesystematic research in this area. The present article is a selectedreview of the literature, through more than 200 articleson burnout in health care workers treating HIV/AIDS patientspublished since 1988. The main purpose is to providea framework and a global paradigm of the burnout processin different health workers looking after patients with AIDS.Among the aspects evaluated are the process, stressors, buffersand consequences of burnout. The analysis shows thepresence of methodological inconsistencies that have hinderedthe development of a coherent view in this specific field, and the establishment of effective prevention and interventionprogrammes."
