What are the archaisms for in oriental Judeospanish? A different way to look at an old question. If what is or is not an archaism in oriental Judeospanish and Ladino was previously discussed, its role in the evolution of the language was scarcely considered. It raises the question of the expelled Jews’ linguistic background and their residual knowledge of Arabic. This contribution analyses some cases (the reasons of the presence and retention of archaisms in Judeospanish, their sociolinguistic role) and tries to demonstrate how residual forms are used to build convergences between the Romanic language and new contact languages in the Ottoman empire (Greek, Turkish and, later, French).
