Ten years after the collapse of the Soviet empire one thing seems clear: the word “postcommunism” to describe the variety of its off springs has become almost irrelevant. What indeed is the common denominator of Hungary and Albania, the Czech Republic and Belarus, or Poland and Kazakhstan? The fact that they used to share Soviet-style communism is hardly relevant for understanding the vastly different itineraries of the democratic transition in each.
