Grégoire Bigot, « La conception de l’État dans l’œuvre d’Édouard Laboulaye », Revue Française d'Histoire des Idées Politiques, ID : 10670/1.iibho7
The brand of liberalism Laboulaye nourished was radical in the sense that it founded political and/or public Law upon liberty. Liberties must not be absorbed by this allegedly sovereign thing called State which claimed to be invested with the power to grant, therefore deny, them. Political societies were thus built from bottom up, individual liberties being both their starting point and their impassable horizon. Such an absolute as liberty could not be reduced to the sovereignty of the State (traduction : Michael Soubbotnik).
