Cet article étudie le couple formé par Albert et Madeleine Thomas. En retrait dans l’espace public, Madeleine exerce pourtant une intense activité politique aux côtés de son mari. L’engagement politique d’Albert s’appuie ainsi sur une véritable entreprise familiale et conjugale qui repose néanmoins sur une répartition des tâches asymétriques. Après le décès d’Albert en 1932, Madeleine cherche à perpétuer la mémoire de son défunt mari. Ce parcours conjugal original invite à réévaluer l’importance du travail politique effectué par Madeleine Thomas ainsi que son rôle d’infatigable passeuse de mémoire qui l’insère dans les cercles politiques et intellectuels français et internationaux.

This article studies the couple Albert and Madeleine Thomas. Although Madeleine was withdrawn from the public arena, she was very active in politics alongside her husband. Albert’s political commitment was thus based on a family and marital partnership that nevertheless implied an asymmetrical division of tasks. After Albert’s death in 1932, Madeleine sought to perpetuate the memory of her late husband. This original conjugal path suggests to re-evaluate the importance of the political work carried out by Madeleine Thomas as well as her role as a relay of Albert’s memory which inserted her into French and international political and intellectual circles.
