Urban flooding is a frequent problem in San Jose, Costa Rica. This city has been confronted with this phenomenonthroughout its history, which is why these events have generated and continue to generate discourses about the cityand its actors. The purpose of the article is to study the history of urban flooding in the south of the city of San Josethrough the analysis of newspaper archives from the 20th century. This analysis of the way in which the problem ofurban flooding has been treated by newspapers reassesses recent events and the discourses associated with them. Itexamines the continuity in the collective imaginary’s perception of these events. Narratives associated today to urbanflooding, such as the State and local government’s lack of responsibility, the power of engineering, or the way in whichthe poor and vulnerable are affected, have all been cultivated in the last century. The article shows the continuitiesand ruptures in those discourses. It focuses on San Jose’s southern neighborhoods, barrios del sur, a very importantarea for the capital city’s memory as it harbors its popular history.
