Adam sat beneath the wooden water tank on the roof of his building on West 57th Street, scanning the new tower block across the street with his binoculars. The walls were of tinted glass, with structural beams of an alloy that had a distinct golden cast. His neighbors had turned on their lights for the evening, so they were highlighted in their windows as though on a stage.
