From the problems of the article and the verb, dealt with in the first third of the 20th century (1919 and 1929), Gustave Guillaume taught at the EPHESS from 1938 to 1960. By identifying the systems behind the systems that make up a language, operating at any given time and in any given moment within the speakers of that language, he renewed and clarified Humboldt’s genetic and theoretical aim. Almost two-thirds of a century after his death, the consideration of enunciation and discourse, under the guidance of Benveniste – distant from the Prague School and the development of phonology – will have brought about a posthumous anthropological proximity of the two great disciples of Meillet (Colloquium, 2016). Not without referring meaning to the “feeling” of the body (with Merleau-Ponty) and to its “making sign” where Peirce will undoubtedly have contributed to draw the linguistic mutation of the Cartesian Cogito.
