What were the choices made in the communication made both to the world of politics and to the world of cosmopolitan society regarding the death of Napoleon I’s illegitimate son? The present article considers this question whilst at the same time taking a long view of the causes pursued by Marie Waleswka’s son and the offices he held up until September 1868, for the most part in the name of, but not limited to, the “imperial cousin”. This is an account of the death of a Prince of Empire during the reign of Napoleon III.
