Globalization in the Near East created tensions, but these tensions are more sectarian or corporate rather than class struggles because of the permanence of the sectarianism within societies and because of the particular nature of this "indirect globalization" coming from the Arab Sunni Gulf. The access to oil and gas income from the Arab Gulf is often linked to sectarian clientelism. The struggles for Beirut and the Syrian crisis are partly a consequence of this process.
