After a quick reminder of the philosophical views of the relation between art and emotions, I defend the following ideas : emotion is not opposed to reason, from which it is not always easy to distinguish it, especially in the explanation of human behavior. Indeed, emotion plays a role in choice and decision making, as has been shown in a number of contemporary works in neuro-psychology. Regarding the production and perception of art, emotion has an important role, as has been remarked since the classic ages, but it does not only arise from the content of works of art, it also arises from the cognitive process of art perception and interpretation and, notably, when a work achieves a subtle balance between the efforts necessary to apprehend it and its effects, the audience can feel a pleasure that may counterbalance the possibly negative emotional impact of its content.

Après un rappel historique rapide de la vision philosophique des liens entre art et émotions, je défends les idées suivantes : l'émotion ne s'oppose pas à la raison, dont il n'est d'ailleurs pas facile de la distinguer, notamment dans l'explication du comportement humain. De fait, l'émotion a un rôle à jouer dans le choix et la prise de décision, comme le montrent bon nombre de travaux contemporains en neuro-psychologie. En ce qui concerne la pratique et la perception artistique, l'émotion a, comme on l'a noté depuis la plus haute antiquité, un rôle important, mais elle ne naît pas seulement du contenu des oeuvres d'art, elle naît aussi de du processus cognitif de la perception et de l'interprétation artistique et, notamment, lorsque l'œuvre d'art arrive à un équilibre subtil entre les efforts que nécessite son appréhension et les effets qu'elle produit, le public peut ressentir un plaisir capable de contrebalancer l'éventuel impact émotionnel négatif de son contenu.
