"Taking an editorial position requires care, consistency and good documentation. Nevertheless, there are certain events that demand the speedy adoption of a standpoint from the newspaper as a social institution. This article analyzes the case of editorials published by the leading Spanish newspapers on the 12th September 2001, following the terrorist attack against the United States, and studies the specificities of this journalistic genre. The press, aware of the fact that the exceptional demand for a response could have a profound effect on the editorial line of the medium in question, tried to present their editorials as news items in themselves."
