André Fossion, « Le catéchuménat, modèle inspirateur de toute catéchèse », Revue Lumen Vitae, ID : 10670/1.jdtmho
The restoration of the adult catechumenate called for by the Second Vatican Council brought with it a demand for and a spirit of renewal of the entire edifice of catechesis. And so it was that the catechumenate could be considered the model and inspiration behind all catechesis. How and in what way? The experience of the catechumenate shows first of all how the free maturation of the desire to become a Christian was supported by the encounter with other Christians nearby, as well as by a familiarisation with the fabric of church life in all its breadth and diversity. The catechumenate also reveals a dynamic of maturing faith that articulates, in a way that is exemplary for all catechesis, the reading of the Scriptures, the profession of baptismal faith and the review of one’s life. The catechumenate, ultimately, inspires a return to the traditional order of the three sacraments of initiation. The return to this traditional order leads us to imagine a new process of initiation for the young generations. All in all, the catechumenate invites Christian communities to be simultaneously catechised and catechisers.
