Résumé
Foreword The Conference « Cyprus between the Orient and the Occident » (Nicosia, October 1994, Archaeological Research Unit, University of Cyprus) was organized by Lyon and Cyprus. After thirty years of cooperation (history and archaeology) between the Maison de l'Orient Méditerranéen of Lyon and Cypriot archaeologists, this work arises from the desire to establish new ties between the University of Lyon 2 and the new University of Cyprus and to widen the scope of collaboration in the social sciences and research on the contemporary period. It is from the perspective of the east Mediterranean that sociologists and ethnologists of the Maison de l'Orient specializing in the contemporary Arab world approach Cyprus and come to seek collaborations. As a result of the Conference discussions, this book presents not only survey and conclusions of achieved research, but also schemes and projects. It explores four themes which would be developed later on in collaboration by scholars of both institutions : 1. Migrations, exchanges and territories. 2. Languages and Identity, Image and Memories. 3. Images and representations from the West. 4. Socialisations and mobilities.
