Le sentiment de la nature dans l’habitat des élites (1760-1790)

Résumé 0

Place for representation and social affirmation, the dwelling places of the elite are transformed in the 18th century in order to leave more room for pleasure and the expression of sensitivity. Nature, in particular, imposes itself as a fertile decorative theme, which renews the aspect of interiors. Especially in the cycles painted by Joseph Vernet and then by Hubert Robert, the taste for a rural and somewhat artificial nature gives way to visions that are grandiose and stirring and that arouse new emotions. At the same time the trompe l’œil landscapes offer a spectacular panoramic vision that transforms the room into a grove of greenery. The winter gardens and mirrors blur the frontiers between inside and outside, thus completing the transformation of the residence into a space for the senses.
