The Ancient Glass Industry in Israel: Summary of the Finds and New Discoveries

This paper focuses on the evidence of glass production in Israel found in excavations and surveys from the 50's to the present day. The discussion of each of the main sites includes a short description of the finds, references, and a discussion of the importance of the finds to the whole picture. In some cases the material represents only a preliminary stage of the work. The primary glassworkshop of Bet Eli'ezer and the secondary glassworkshop of Bet She'an (Scythopolis) are presented in more detail due to their excellent quality of preservation and the help they bring for a better understanding of the finds.

Cette communication tente, en mettant en relief les découvertes provenant de fouilles ou de prospections menées depuis les années cinquante jusqu'à aujourd'hui, de faire le point sur les données archéologiques qui attestent la production du verre en Israël. La présentation de chacun des sites principaux inclut une courte description des découvertes, la bibliographie afférente et leur mise en perspective par rapport aux découvertes de l'ensemble de la région. L'atelier primaire de Bet Eli'ezer et l'atelier secondaire de Bet She'an (Scythopolis) sont présentés en détail en raison de leur excellent état de conservation et de l'importance des informations qu'ils apportent pour une meilleure compréhension de l'ensemble des découvertes.
