This study attempts to examine the ironic task of “de-authorising” the author and the literary canon in The Romantic Plot (2009). In this eccentric novel Carmen Boullosa writes obsessively about writing and writers. On the fictional level, she questions the author’s relationship with posterity, fame, and oblivion. On the metafictional level, she addresses the dissolution of textual authority, which enables a discussion on the image of the writer as a demiurge, and on his or her importance in the literary tradition. The demolition work undertaken by this postmodern manifesto seems to ruin, from the very beginning, any attempt to conciliate the present with the normative ambition of the literary tradition. But this novel has multiple facets. Despite the savage humor she distills in it, Carmen Boullosa also recognizes her personal literary debts. In this sense, the dense intertextuality deployed in The Romantic Plot appears to be an offer of reconciliation with tradition.
