Au début du xixe siècle, fragmenter la planète pour en révéler l’unité est un objectif important des sciences naturalistes alors en pleine expansion. Le colonel Jean-Baptiste Bory de Saint-Vincent, géologue, botaniste et zoologue, est aussi cartographe : il produit en 1827 une belle mise en ordre cartographique et raciologique de l’écoumène. Cette double classification témoigne d’une pensée scientifique aux prises avec la mondialisation de la Terre et l’ordre politique et religieux de la France sous la Restauration.

Sharing the Earth, Take Stock of MankindAt the beginning of the 19th century, dividing up the planet to reveal its unity was a key objective of the fast-expanding naturalist sciences. Colonel Jean-Baptiste de Saint-Vincent, a geologist, botanist and zoologist, was also a cartographer and in 1827, he yielded a fine cartographical and raciological map of the ecumene. This double classification bespeaks a scientific mind grappling with the globalization of the earth and the French political and religious order under the Bourbon Restoration.
