In his book La Structure de l'âme et l'expérience mystique (1927), the Dominican theologian Ambroise Gardeil (1859-1931) constantly developed an intuition, first inspired by his reading of the commentator John of St Thomas, then verified and supported by his direct acquaintance with the texts of Aquinas, themselves based on those of St Augustine. This central intuition could be formulated as follows: the immediacy of the knowledge of God by the just soul, fully open to grace and to the presence of dwelling within it, finds its natural counterpart and its structural foundation in the immediate perception that this same soul has of itself through simple, habitual and pre-reflexive self-presence. In the last years of his life, it was through a renewed reading of the treatise on divine missions in St Thomas Aquinas that Ambroise Gardeil was able to make right, in speculative and spiritual theology, the 'pure mystical experience'.

Dans son livre La Structure de l’âme et l’expérience mystique (1927), le théologien dominicain Ambroise Gardeil (1859-1931) n’a cessé de développer une intuition, d’abord inspirée par la lecture du commentateur Jean de Saint-Thomas, puis vérifiée et étayée par la fréquentation directe des textes de l’Aquinate, eux-mêmes adossés à ceux de saint Augustin. Cette intuition centrale pourrait se formuler ainsi : l’immédiateté de la connaissance de Dieu par l’âme juste, pleinement ouverte à la grâce et à la présence d’habitation en elle, trouve son pendant naturel et comme son fondement structurel dans la perception immédiate que cette même âme a d’elle-même par simple présence à soi, habituelle et préréflexive. Dans les toutes dernières années de sa vie, c’est par une lecture renouvelée du traité des missions divines chez saint Thomas d’Aquin qu'Ambroise Gardeil a su faire droit, en théologie spéculative et spirituelle, à « l’expérience mystique pure ».
