Beginnings of the Chilean consular presence in the Society Islands. The case of the Gibson administration in Tahiti (1854-1862)

L´article analyse les liens entre le Chili et les îles de la Société entre 1854 et 1862. Il tient compte pour cela de l’étude d’aspects religieux et géographiques qui, ensemble avec en plus des variables essentiellement commerciales, ont déterminé la création du premier consulat chilien sur la plus grande île, Tahiti. Il aborde également le contexte et les problèmes rencontrés par l’État chilien à l’époque et examine le travail de son premier consul, Andrew Gibson, à Papeete. Enfin, il fournit des informations de fond jusque-là inconnues sur ce processus et soulève de nouvelles questions sur les relations entre le Chili et Tahiti.

In this article, I analyze the connection between Chile and the Society Islands from 1854 to 1862. For this purpose, I consider the study of religious and geographical aspects, which, added to essentially commercial parameters, determined the creation of the first Chilean consulate on the largest of the islands, Tahiti. Likewise, I address both the context and the problems faced by Chile during this period and examine the work of its first official consul in Papeete, Andrew Gibson. Finally, I give an account of hitherto unknown antecedents of the process and formulate new questions about Chilean-Tahitian relations.
