Within the context of an intensification of the debates about the European identity, a growing number of French and German historians is dealing with the History of Europe since the 1980s-90s, looking particularly into the question of a common European History. Criticisms appear then within the historians' community, which warn against europeism and insist on the plurality of the History of Europe. In this context, the present contribution underlines the fact that this conflict concerning the European object expresses an inherent tension within the Historical discipline, which draws its legitimacy from its social utility as well as from its scientific character, and aims at showing how the idea of "Unity in Diversity" allows historians to overcome this internal tension.
