By 1985, fifteen years after Canada had recognized the People’s Republic of China, relations between the two countries had reached a level of maturity. Trade was steadily expanding and China ranked as Canada’s fifth largest trading partner. A growing number of high-level visits marked an apparent tightening of relations between the two governments.
