Dans cet article, nous étudions la manière dont les journées d’intégration dans les grands cabinets d’audit intiment à l’auditeur de se confesser pour devenir le professionnel attendu. Nous ne cherchons pas à faire la critique du métier, mais décrivons les discours et pratiques de confession par lesquels les journées d’intégration facilitent l’intégration des recrues. Au moyen d’une étude ethnographique, nous montrons que ces journées forment un ensemble de discours-cadres se structurant autour de l’adoption d’une position basse, de la confession de ses faiblesses et de leur dépassement par leur mise en valeur financière. Elles permettent de comprendre comment l’introspection et la narration de soi participent à la construction de l’auditeur et définissent de façon fondamentale son professionnalisme.

A case study of the orientation period organized in a big auditing firmHow does the orientation period in big auditing firms induce recruits to “confess” in order to become the professionals expected of them? Rather than making a critique of the profession of auditor, this description focuses on the discourses and practices of confession, whereby the period devoted to orienting newcomers in a firm facilitates their integration. The findings of a case study based on fieldwork show how this period shapes a set of discourses centered on adopting a low profile, confessing one’s weakness and overcoming them by assigning them a financial value. Introspection and self-narration thus take part in forming auditors and fundamentally define their sense of professionalism.
